And there is a purely administrative reason behind it …
Previously, SASSA Old-Age Grant top-ups in October were announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana. In the past, this occurred during his Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) each October.
However, this year, Gondongwana’s MTBPS only takes place on Wednesday 21 October 2026, well after the agency’s disbursement day of Friday 2 October 2026. A surefire sign that there’s no intention to raise them again.
SASSA OLD-AGE GRANT TOP-UPS IN OCTOBER 2026
What makes the usual SASSA Old-Age Grant top-ups for October 2026 even more doubtful is what occurred in the February 2026 Budget Speech. The South African Social Security Agency made no mention at all of later top-ups in the year.
Therefore, we can only assume that elderly beneficiaries have already received their full allocation of funds for the year. In April 2026, Old-Age Grants increased by R80 to R2 400 (60 to 74) and R2 420 (over 75) respectively.
As such, if by some miracle new SASSA minister Dina Pule is able to motivate for elderly grant increases in October 2026, it will be down to charity instead of a budgeted decision by the National Treasury. And government bean counters have shown little appetite for the latter this cycle. In the past, a R10 increase in October 2024, took grants to R2 190 per month (60 to 74) and R2 210 (over 75). The same happened again in October 2025, climbing by R10 to R2 320 (60 to 74) and R2 340 (over 75) respectively.
INFLATION OUTRUNS SASSA GRANT INCREASES IN 2026

Image: FileWorse still, there is a very solid argument to be made in favour of SASSA Old-Age Grant top-ups for October 2026. Back in February 2026, when the last increases were being set by the finance minister, inflation sat tidily at 3.5%. Therefore, an R80 (3.7%) increase may have seemed adequate. Of course, tensions in the Middle East and fuel-price carnage meant it didn’t hold. Annual inflation climbed to 4.0% in April, 4.5% in May, and peaked at 5.0% in June. Therefore, the real value of that R80 increase has been shrinking faster than a SASSA beneficiaries’ monthly shopping list.
Moreover, the truth is the National Treasury has explicitly been trimming social grant allocation each year. It’s earmarked R2 billion in savings through stricter review policies by 2026/27.
Politically, however, the pressure on government is real. Pensioner groups have petitioned Parliament for a R5 000 grant amid the cost-of-living strain. We will continue to cross our fingers and see if the agency does announce any top-ups ahead of the Friday 2 October 2026 payment date.
