When the conversation turns to the NFL’s best defensive back, Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II continues to make a compelling case.
Surtain was again the centerpiece of a Denver defense that finished among the NFL’s top three in both total and scoring defense last season. Despite missing three games because of a pectoral injury, Surtain earned his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl selection and continued producing elite numbers in coverage.
According to Next Gen Stats, Surtain surrendered only one touchdown on 63 targets across 572 coverage snaps in 2025.
Those numbers reinforce why the 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year remains the standard against which other cornerbacks are measured.
Surtain’s ability to stay attached to receivers is particularly impressive. Pass catchers averaged only 2.1 yards of separation when Surtain was targeted last season, according to NFL Pro. That ranked second among defenders with at least 50 targets, trailing only Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, who allowed 1.8 yards of separation.
For Denver, Surtain’s impact extends beyond individual statistics.
Is he the NFL’s number 1 cornerback?
His ability to handle an opponent’s top receiving threat gives the Broncos flexibility throughout their defense. Denver can be more aggressive with pressure packages and safety alignments knowing Surtain can survive difficult one-on-one assignments.
There is plenty of competition for the unofficial title of the NFL’s best defensive back. Mitchell has quickly established himself among the league’s elite, while several established stars remain capable of changing games.
But few can match Surtain’s combination of consistency, individual recognition and sustained production.
After finishing among the NFL’s top defensive backs again, Surtain has made the argument increasingly difficult to dismiss.
The question is no longer whether he belongs in the conversation.
It’s whether anybody has done enough to knock him off the top.
