Mumbai: Tension erupted in Mumbai’s Mazgaon late Sunday night after eggs were allegedly thrown at the arrival procession of the Mazgaon Cha Morya Ganpati idol. Local residents and Ganesh devotees claimed that the eggs were thrown from a nearby building as the procession was passing through the area. The incident triggered a gathering of people and heated arguments, following which police personnel reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

According to Vivek Rana, deputy secretary of the Ganpati mandal, the incident took place when the Ganesh idol’s arrival procession was passing around 30 to 40 metres from the pandal. He alleged that eggs were thrown at the procession from a building and called the incident objectionable. The mandal has demanded strict action against those responsible.

Senior Cops Rush To Spot, Try To Pacify Crowd
Senior police officer Jayant Meena was seen at the spot attempting to pacify the crowd as tensions escalated. In a video, Meena urged people not to raise slogans or create a disturbance and asked them to trust the police and allow the law to take its course.

Police officials said an FIR was registered against unidentified persons following directions from the Mumbai Police Commissioner. Authorities are now examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify those allegedly involved in the incident.
In another video, Hitesh Chandrakant Jadhav, president of the Akhil Sarvajanik Utsav Samiti Maharashtra, said an egg allegedly came from a housing society and broke near the trolley carrying the Ganesh idol. He claimed the incident led to a rise in tension and the arrival of a large number of Ganesh devotees in Mazgaon.

Non-Bailable Offence Registered Against Unknown
Jadhav said members of organisations including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal were also present and extended support to the Ganpati mandal. He claimed that the police had registered a non-bailable offence against an unidentified person and assured those present that efforts would be made to identify the accused within 24 hours. He appealed to devotees and Ganesh mandals to remain calm and wait for further updates from the official mandal channels.
Bhuleshwar Cha Raja Tragedy
The incident comes just a day after another major Ganesh idol-related tragedy in Mumbai. On Saturday night, a 22-foot-tall Ganesh idol reportedly fell during its arrival procession in Bhuleshwar, killing two people and injuring five others, including two girls aged five and seven. The idol was being brought from Byculla to Bhuleshwar when a welding support structure at the rear reportedly broke around 50 to 60 metres before the pandal.
Mumbai is expected to witness large-scale Ganesh celebrations this year. The 10-day Ganesh festival will begin across Maharashtra on September 14, with around 10,600 public Ganesh mandals in Mumbai. However, around 2,500 mandals have reportedly obtained permission for the 10-day celebrations. Across Maharashtra, nearly 28 lakh Ganesh idols are expected to be installed during the festival.
