Texas A&M basketball favorites to land talented Texas transfer guard

According to a report from a basketball insider, Texas A&M is the favorite to land a talented Texas transfer after recent court rulings provided him with extra eligibility.

Longhorns guard Jordan Pope is on the verge of landing with the Aggies. Pope had spent the last couple of months in Austin rehabbing from foot surgery while waiting for the 2022 eligibility ruling, but Texas does not have a roster spot available, forcing the California native to continue his collegiate career elsewhere.

His next destination could end up being in College Station playing for head coach Bucky McMillan in the Maroon and White. Pope spent the first two seasons of his career at Oregon State, where he earned All-PAC-12 honors, before transferring to Texas for his junior campaign during the 2024-25 season.

Last season, Pope averaged 13.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game for the Longhorns. In Texas' 74-68 upset win over Gonzaga to advance to the Sweet 16, the 6-foot-1 senior recorded his 15th game with 15 or more points, compiling 17 points, three assists and one rebound.

Pope has a unique skill set that could make him a perfect fit as a volume shooter in McMillan's high-paced offensive style of basketball. While he will be competing for playing time alongside an already stacked roster of talent, including Kansas State guard PJ Haggerty, he would provide Texas A&M another talented shooter with experience competing on the biggest stage.

For the Aggies, it is now a waiting game to see what decision Pope makes to play his final season of collegiate basketball. However, Texas A&M has reportedly left a sole roster spot available in case something like this were to happen with the new 2022 eligibility ruling, which grants players from that class an extra year of eligibility.
