Red Sox will play Field of Dreams game in 2027 vs. Royals

Major League Baseball announced Friday that the Red Sox will face the Royals in the 2027 “MLB at Field of Dreams” game in Dyersville, Iowa next summer. Boston and Kansas City will play at the “Field of Dreams” movie site on August 12. It’s the fourth edition of the event which began in 2021.

The Red Sox will play the White Sox in Chicago from August 9-11, then were supposed to have an off day before a series in Kansas City against the Royals. Now, they’ll play the Royals in Iowa on Thursday (a Royals home game) and have Friday off before playing the final two games of the series at Kauffman Stadium. NBC Sports will have exclusive national coverage of the event.
“To have the Red Sox take the field in Iowa, in a place that reminds us why people fall in love with baseball, will be incredibly special,” team president/CEO Sam Kennedy said in a statement released by MLB. “Part of what has allowed baseball to endure for generations is its ability to evolve while still holding onto the traditions, memories, and shared experiences that give the game its meaning. We can’t wait to experience that in Dyersville with our players, our fans, and baseball fans everywhere.”
MLB first announced plans to hold games at the movie site in 2020 but did not host one until 2021, when the White Sox beat the Yankees. The Reds and Cubs played there in 2022, and after a four-year hiatus, the Phillies and Twins faced off Thursday night. Philadelphia won that game, 7-1.
In advance of the first iteration of the game, MLB built a field near the movie site with fences bordering cornfields. Thursday night’s game drew 7,163 fans.
Next year’s game will be the latest example of the Red Sox participating in a specialty game. In 2022, they faced the Orioles in the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. In 2019, they faced the Yankees for two games in London, and in 2008, opened their season against the Athletics in Tokyo. The Red Sox also played spring training games in the Dominican Republic (2024) and Mexico (2025).
