The Oklahoma City Thunder will play 82 regular-season games during the 2026-27 campaign. Somehow, the first one already feels like it means everything.

Oklahoma City will begin its season on October 20 by visiting the San Antonio Spurs in a rematch of last year’s Western Conference Finals. The Spurs eliminated the Thunder in seven games, ending Oklahoma City’s championship defense on its own floor.
From a mathematical standpoint, this is only one game. Losing would not destroy the Thunder’s season, while winning would not guarantee another championship. For Oklahoma City and its fans, none of that matters.
This is absolutely a statement game. The Thunder will want to remind everyone that they remain the top dogs in the Western Conference, despite San Antonio taking their crown and becoming the conference’s newest threat. Nobody enters the matchup with more pressure than Chet Holmgren.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander competed throughout the Western Conference Finals. Oklahoma City also survived important games without an injured Jalen Williams. Holmgren, however, appeared scared to challenge Victor Wembanyama when his team needed him most.
Holmgren averaged only 10.7 points throughout the series. He then finished Game 7 with four points while attempting only two shots in nearly 33 minutes. That cannot happen again.
Holmgren does not need to outscore Wembanyama on opening night. He does not even need to produce an incredible statistical performance. He simply needs to compete without fear.
Attack the rim. Take open shots. Protect the paint. Play like an NBA champion, All-Star and All-NBA defender.
Oklahoma City committed approximately $240 million to Holmgren because the organization believes he can become one of the defining players of this era. His first opportunity to begin proving it comes against the player who made him disappear.
The Thunder must also establish that trading Lu Dort did not weaken their defense.
Dort will forever remain an important part of Oklahoma City’s championship history, but the Thunder should be better without his questionable shot selection and unnecessary fouls. Cason Wallace and Alex Caruso give Mark Daigneault enough perimeter defense without creating the same offensive problems.
An opening-night victory would not erase what happened in May. San Antonio would still own the result that mattered most.
However, beating the Spurs on their floor would restore confidence and announce that Oklahoma City remains the team everyone must defeat to control the West.
Game 1 should not mean this much. For the Thunder, it means everything.
