The Miami Heat acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster trade with the Milwaukee Bucks, pairing him with star center Bam Adebayo.
In addition to Antetokounmpo, the Heat also received Bobby Portis in the trade. This meant the franchise needed to cut salaries to avoid further luxury taxes. It led to Norman Powell’s departure as an unrestricted free agent.
The decision from the Heat seemingly rubbed Powell the wrong way, as the now-Chicago Bulls star shared his honest thoughts on not getting a chance to play with Antetokounmpo.

The biggest reason why Powell was shocked by the Heat’s decision to let him walk for free was his potential partnership with Antetokounmpo. Powell thought he would have been great with Giannis.
In his comments, Powell also took a subtle shot at Portis for being packaged with the Greek Freak to comply with the CBA rules. Portis took offense to this and set the record straight with Powell on X.
“Yo Norm, I always respected ya game from a distance. We in the same draft. Shout out to 2015. Only bout 9 of us left, but keep my name out your mouth, brother,” Portis wrote on X.
“I ain’t no throw-in piece. From champ to champ, respectfully king. Be blessed, brother,” the Heat star added.
Upon seeing Portis’ answer, Powell asked the now-Heat star to reach out to him directly on the phone and clear the air. After all, it could be a simple misunderstanding.
