The Boston Red Sox have now lost three in a row, and it seems like it's taking a bit of wind out of their sails. However, they might get their energy back with the stars that are returning to the squad.
Adley Rutschman is the first big name to return, as he was activated for tonight. However, he isn’t the biggest name Sox fans are looking forward to; that would be Garrett Crochet. If Crochet were to come back as a starting pitcher though, it would take longer than the rest of the season for him to ramp up to full power. However, a position change could help expedite his return.
Crochet’s been out for a while

Last season, Crochet was the AL innings pitched king, and the MLB strikeout king. He also was the runner-up to Tarik Skubal for the AL Cy Young.
This season though, Crochet has not been there for Boston at all. Back in April, the big lefty went down on the 10-day IL with shoulder soreness, which turned into a 60-day IL stint after he suffered a setback. Now, Boston believes that if he were to come back, he wouldn’t have enough time to ramp back up before the season ends. With that in mind, they’ve come up with a different solution.

Boston’s solution is pretty simple: return Crochet to his previous role as a reliever.
Crochet is open to it as well. “There’s no ego about it. It’s something I’ve done before,” Crochet said. “If there’s any way possible I can help this team achieve the goal we set out in spring training, the goal that every team sets out to achieve, if I could help us achieve it, I don’t really care what the role is,” (via Kaley Brown).
Crochet was a great reliever in 2021 for the Chicago White Sox, which was his first full season in the MLB. He played in 54 games, and posted a 2.82 ERA, 65 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.270 over 54 innings pitched.

It’s not like Boston desperately needs his services in their rotation, either. The Red Sox have a top rotation in the MLB, consisting of Sonny Gray, Ranger Suarez, Payton Tolle, Jake Bennett, and Patrick Sandoval.
Getting Crochet in a relieving role would be the cherry on top for this Boston defense. While they may not get him for a full start, getting him for an inning or two two out of every three games would be amazing for them, especially now. Hopefully, they get Crochet back soon, and keep their mojo going into October.
