Chicago Sky guard/forward DiJonai Carrington opened up on why she committed the Flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham that got her ejected from their last game.

Carrington swiped Cunningham out of the air on a layup attempt at the end of the first quarter of the Sky’s 86-90 loss to the Indiana Fever on Saturday.
Carrington was ejected from the game for her physical play, with the 28-year-old receiving severe backlash and even Congressional threats for her play. But now, she’s explained her side.

Carrington spoke to the media before the Sky’s game against the Seattle Storm on Monday, addressing the truth behind her foul on Cunningham as unfortunate contact, reiterating that it wasn’t intentional.
“I’m never gonna let an open layup just be had. You can pull clips from however many seasons of me making that same exact play. It was unfortunate that I made contact with her in the way that I did, but it was never intentional.”
It was an aggressive move that even Fever coach Stephanie White defended as an aggressive defensive play instead of one with violent malice. There are clips of Carrington executing blocks on similar plays, although this was quite a physical hit on Cunningham.

Carrington is averaging 12.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.0 steals this season, while Cunningham is averaging 8.9 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists.
Carrington scored a career-high 26 points with six rebounds and five steals against the Storm in her first full game since the Fever incident, clearly using the recent backlash as fuel to power her night, although the Sky lost 88-97.
