Tyler Herro was the primary option in their guard rotation, but since he got traded for Antetokounmpo, it is on Davion Mitchell to step up. Mitchell has been a reliable guard for a long while, but it seems he is due for a breakout season in the 2026-27 campaign.

For his entire career, Mitchell has been known to be a defensive stopper. He is one of the toughest matchups for any guard because he is strong and quick to react with his rotations. He is also quite smart, which is why he was such a lauded prospect from his college days.
As one of the guards he has to guard all the time, D'Angelo Russell knows how tough it is to play against Mitchell. That is why he sees Mitchell having a big-time season in the 2026-27 campaign because he has seen up close how good Mitchell has gotten.

From the 2025-26 season, Mitchell averaged 9.3 points and 6.5 assists per game. He started 70 games for the Heat, but now, it seems he is fully locked in as the starting point guard. He will have a much bigger role, so the expectation for him is to elevate those points and assists numbers.
"Davion Mitchell. For everybody that’s keeping up with him this summer, the work that he’s putting in, I think he’s going to take a huge step under that organization. I think he killed it and brought that energy last year and this year," Russell said about Mitchell on The Backyard Podcast.
Those are massive compliments for Mitchell, and he deserves to get them for what he has done recently. He has been working on his game, and everyone is seeing that he is motivated to be one of the best players on a Heat team that wants to compete for a championship with their superstars.
