Anthony Elanga Injury Update Emerges After Newcastle’s Winger Gets Stretchered Off

Newcastle United came away from Matthias Jaissle’s first game in charge with a 2-1 preseason victory over Valencia, but the result quickly became secondary when Anthony Elanga was stretchered off following a reckless challenge at Mestalla.

Speaking after the game, Jaissle revealed that the Magpies winger appears to have avoided a serious injury and could even return next week after the club’s medical staff gave an encouraging initial assessment, with Sky Sports labeling it as “contusion to the shin.”

“The only thing I can say is that it seems to be not bad, and we hope it’s true that Anthony can start again next week,” Jaissle said, per The Athletic’s Chris Waugh.
Elanga was caught high on his right leg by Valencia defender and captain Jose Gaya after getting beyond the Spaniard during the first half. Gaya was immediately shown a straight red card, while the challenge sparked an angry on-pitch confrontation involving players from both teams, including reserves.
Jaissle himself reacted furiously from the sideline before later admitting how concerned he had been when he saw Elanga go down.
“Of course I was in fear, definitely. But now I am more relaxed because the medical department is showing a green light for it,” Jaissle said. “It was a really tough (challenge), it was not expected. Fouls are part of the game — that was really harsh.”
Ultimately, Elanga was walking around after leaving the field and is seemingly dealing with just a contusion, easing fears created by the sight of the 24-year-old being carried away on a stretcher while covering his face.
The winger had a great start to Saturday’s game, repeatedly threatening Valencia’s defense and having a first-half goal ruled out for a marginal offside before being forced off.
Elanga joined Newcastle from Nottingham Forest last summer for £52 million (€59.8 million) plus add-ons but endured a difficult first Premier League season on Tyneside, failing to score despite making 49 appearances across all competitions.
