‘Total Clown Show’ — NFL World Reacts to Chargers OC Mike McDaniel’s ‘Cringeworthy’ Press Conference

Ever since Mike McDaniel first had a microphone placed in front of him, the NFL world has gotten to know him as an eccentric personality. Even though he’s no longer asked to address the media as often as he was as the Miami Dolphins’ head coach, McDaniel still gets plenty of opportunities in the spotlight as the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coordinator.
Even though he’s in a new division, with a new team, and a new title, McDaniel is the same quirky person fans have come to love, and sometimes criticize.

Mike McDaniel’s Presser Called a ‘Total Clown Show’
McDaniel’s latest press conference included some more quirky moments, and it didn’t take long for social media to have a field day with the way he came off.
“Has Mike McDaniel’s shtick run its course?”
Brandon Liguori, who covers McDaniel’s old team for Roundtable Sports, says he “doesn’t miss” McDaniel’s schtick “one bit.”
“As a #Dolphins reporter, I don’t miss this one bit, and I’m sure most fans would agree.”
Meanwhile, one responder agreed, praising McDaniel for being a “good offensive mind” but also ripped him for being a “total clown show.”

Even though McDaniel didn’t step to the podium with tots in his pockets, one fan even went as far as to make a Napoleon Dynamite comparison.
“Mike McDaniel does this Napoleon Dynamite bit at the podium and it’s cringeworthy.”
One commenter suggested McDaniel is far better scheming up offensive plays than he is leading a team or running press conferences.
“This coach was better as a X’s and O’s nerd.”
Meanwhile, another commenter found it strange how fans used to appreciate his personality and only turned on McDaniel after the Dolphins stopped experiencing success once injuries struck.
“Fans loved it when it was fresh and new. It’s only after things fell apart that people began to be annoyed by it. I don’t hate him for being him. He just never knew when to turn it off at times.”
Another suggested that McDaniel wasn’t as bad as some fans make him out to be; after all, he still led the Dolphins to a pair of playoff appearances.
“The Dolphins have made the playoffs 5 times in 25 years. 2 of them came under Mike McDaniel’s watch. He’s literally the most successful coach you’ve had in 2 decades. You guys are talking waayyyy too recklessly.”
Another was quick to defend McDaniel for what he accomplished in Miami, where he “dragged a Tua-led offense to the top of the league.”

Ultimately, McDaniel will have to go prove it now that he’s pressing buttons for the Chargers’ offense. Some believe he’ll be a difference-maker who helps unlock the next level in Justin Herbert’s production. Time will tell who’s right, but there’s no questioning his commitment or passion for football.
