LeBron James is, without a doubt, in the last legs of his career. This explains why he prioritized happiness in free agency, choosing to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers to make them one of the favorites to compete for the 2027 NBA championship. James will be 42 years of age in December, and one could only assume that it won’t be long until he hangs up his sneakers for good.
To that end, James’ former teammate, Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal, is urging the new 76ers star to keep going on for as long as he can so that he could build even more of a cushion between him and the rest of the NBA in all-time points scored — making that record of his unbreakable.
“Bron is a modest arrogant guy. For example, he’s loving the fact that he’s the number one scorer in the league. But guess what? I’m gonna put this s**t so far out of reach, nobody will ever (break my record),” O’Neal said in an appearance on The Old Man and The Three podcast.

“I looked at it the other day. LeBron’s at 45,000 (points). He’s still averaging 20. He’s gonna mess around and be at 50,000 points. Guess what? Me and you both will probably be dead before somebody passes that up.”
Shaq believes LeBron is aiming for 50K career points after signing with the 76ers:
“LeBron is a modest arrogant guy… if he could play 2 more years and put all those records out of reach, I would… Because when it’s over, it’s over.”

Just to correct O’Neal’s statement, the 76ers star is at 43,440 career points in the regular season. He has 51,961 combined points when taking into account the playoffs as well.
James scored just 1,256 points last season in 60 games (averaging nearly 21 per game), and he’s expected to score even fewer per game this year now that he’s sharing the court with three other dynamic scorers in Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and Tyrese Maxey. Thus, there is a good chance that James doesn’t even cross the 45,000-point mark for career regular season points by the end of next season.
Nonetheless, James is the biggest physical anomaly in the history of the NBA, so getting to 50,000 career points in the regular season, as unlikely as it may be, is not the most impossible thing in the world.
