Where the Diamondbacks stand less than 24 hours before the trade deadline

PHOENIX — With less than 24 hours left until the MLB trade deadline, the Arizona Diamondbacks have yet to make a significant move.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Sunday morning that the Diamondbacks were interested in acquiring Detroit Tigers pitcher Casey Mize and Washington Nationals infielder Luis Garcia Jr. While Mize is still on the trade block, the New York Yankees eventually acquired Garcia in a trade.
MLB insider Jon Morosi reported that Arizona is still among several teams looking for rental starting pitchers, with Joel Sherman linking the club to New York Mets pitcher Clay Holmes. While there’s no indication that the D-Backs will acquire Holmes, it’s clear the priority is addressing the starting rotation.

These updates highlight the ever-changing nature of trade talks, especially with the deadline less than a day away. They also offer a clearer picture of what Arizona is prioritizing as it looks to bolster the roster. First base was one position many thought would be addressed and still could be, but Arizona may now have to turn to other options.
Those priorities also have to align with Arizona’s financial thresholds, as Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro previously reported that the Snakes would not make a splash for a blockbuster name. Instead, the team plans to complement the roster through lower-key trades and bet on returning players from injury to provide the boost needed to compete for a postseason spot.

At 59-53, the Snakes hold a Wild Card spot after a 6-4 road trip, enough to justify buying if the front office sees fit.
For now, it appears to be a waiting game to see which deals materialize before the deadline and which players the Diamondbacks believe can provide the boost needed for a postseason push.
