Former Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane has emerged as the leading candidate to take over as Bafana Bafana coach following reports that Hugo Broos is set to leave the national team.

According to reports, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has decided not to renew Broos’ contract, bringing an end to his successful five-year spell in charge.
During his tenure, the 74-year-old guided Bafana Bafana to two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and a FIFA World Cup.
At the 2023 AFCON, South Africa finished third – their best result in 24 years – before Broos led the team to the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the country’s history.
His achievements have cemented his legacy as one of South Africa’s greatest national team coaches, alongside the late Clive Barker.
Although SAFA has yet to officially confirm Broos’ departure or announce his successor, attention has quickly turned to Pitso Mosimane.
Mosimane previously coached Bafana Bafana between 2010 and 2012 after serving as an assistant coach from 2007. His first stint as head coach ended in disappointment after South Africa failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
Mosimane could be back at Bafana
His reputation has grown enormously since then. The 61-year-old has won more than 15 major trophies with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly, including multiple CAF Champions League titles, establishing himself as one of Africa’s most successful coaches.
A second spell in charge of Bafana Bafana could offer both Mosimane and South African football the fresh start they need. While he is regarded as the frontrunner for the position, it remains to be seen whether SAFA can meet his financial demands and convince him to return to the nation
