The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to buy at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, and they have needs in the bullpen, the rotation, and especially on offense in the outfield and maybe even the infield.
Recently, the Phillies buzz around a trade for Los Angeles Angels star shortstop Zach Neto has picked up. He'd be a very interesting addition, as the 25-year-old shortstop would be under club control through 2029.
However, there's one major problem with a Neto trade for Philadelphia. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, acquiring Neto might come at a cost that the Phillies most likely would not want to pay.

"But someone like Neto would take, presumably, Wood and Renteria," Passan writes. "And at that point, further acquisitions would deplete Philadelphia's system even more."
There are a few glaring issues with this potential trade for the Phillies. But, the most concerning issue would simply be the two prospects Passan projects would need to be moved to land the young shortstop.
Francisco Renteria is a 17-year-old center fielder who has come onto the scene with the Phillies farm system in the Dominican Summer League, thriving in a way that has Phillies fans very excited for what the future could hold.
He's someone who could easily be the Phillies' top prospect next year and climb very high on overall prospect lists in the future.
But losing Gage Wood, the 2025 first-round pick who has been a riser in the Phillies' farm system and is their current top prospect, would also be a lot to give up.

If the Phillies parted with both in one trade, for Neto, who is a shortstop and would force the Phillies to move around a lot of players to make the roster work, it would be very risky.
Plus, if the Phillies gave up both of those prospects, their farm system would become very weak. Ramon Marquez and Aidan Miller would be the next big prospects, but losing Wood and Renteria would set this team back a while.
Passan is noting the Phillies don't want to trade Renteria this year, which is a good sign. But if they want to land Neto, Passan believes Renteria might need to be included.
If that's the case, Dave Dombrowski should pass on the chance to land the 25-year-old Angels shortstop, instead pursuing different players who won't cost Renteria in a deal this summer, as he should be untouchable for Philadelphia.
