Michael Jordan has weighed in once again on one of sports’ most debated topics—the race to determine the greatest basketball player of all time. Rather than choosing between LeBron James, Kobe Bryant or himself, the six-time NBA champion believes the conversation is impossible to settle fairly across different generations.

Jordan explained that the “GOAT” label has never been something he has focused on, emphasizing that every era of basketball has produced legendary players who helped shape the game for those who followed.
“The GOAT term isn’t something I’ll ever get high or low about,” Jordan said.
Instead of comparing players from different decades, Jordan believes the accomplishments of earlier stars deserve more recognition. He pointed to Hall of Famers Oscar Robertson and Jerry West as examples of players he never had the chance to compete against, making direct comparisons difficult.
“I never played against Oscar Robertson or Jerry West. We paved the road to the Kobes and the LeBrons,” Jordan said.
Jordan also argued that modern players benefit from the evolution of basketball and shouldn’t be measured against pioneers who helped build the sport.
“Don’t use what the next generation learned against the players who taught them the game.”
Kobe vs LeBron
While fans often speculate about how he would have fared against LeBron James or Kobe Bryant, Jordan admitted he would have welcomed the challenge.
“I’d have loved to play against LeBron in my prime. I’d have loved to play against Kobe too.”
Still, he believes those hypothetical debates can never produce a definitive answer.
“It’s an empty comparison. You’ll never find the true answer to that question.”
Jordan closed by praising today’s NBA stars, acknowledging the impact LeBron, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant have had on the sport.
“LeBron has had an unbelievable career. Kobe, KD and the players of this era have elevated the game tremendously. I just don’t agree when you start trying to put one above the other.”
Rather than declaring a single greatest player, Jordan’s perspective celebrates the greatness of every generation, arguing that basketball’s evolution is built on the accomplishments of those who came before.
