Kaizer Chiefs are shaping up well ahead of the 2026/27 season under their new head coach, with optimism growing that the club can finally mount a serious challenge for major honours.
The Soweto giants enjoyed their best league finish in five years last season, ending the campaign in third place, and will be hoping to build on that progress.

Although Amakhosi have only completed two signings so far, more arrivals could follow before the transfer window closes in September.
Here is Kaizer Chiefs’ strongest possible starting XI for next season, including a few ideal transfer targets.
Goalkeeper: Brandon Petersen
Petersen established himself as one of the Premier Soccer League’s top goalkeepers last season and was arguably among the standout performers in his position.
Despite the arrival of Renaldo Leaner, he remains the favourite to start between the posts.
Kaizer Chiefs could fight for the league this season
Right-back: Thabang Matuludi
If Chiefs can secure Matuludi’s signature, it could significantly strengthen their defence. The talented full-back has been linked with both Amakhosi and Orlando Pirates, although the Buccaneers currently appear to be leading the race for his services.
Centre-back: Thabo Moloisane
Moloisane arrived at Naturena on a free transfer and is expected to add leadership, composure and defensive solidity. His experience could prove invaluable as Chiefs look to tighten up at the back.
Centre-back: Miguel Inacio
The Angolan international has had the occasional lapse in concentration, but Chiefs generally look more organised when he is in the side. Alongside Moloisane, he has the potential to form a reliable central defensive partnership following Aden McCarthy’s departure.
Left-back: Bradley Cross
Cross continues to develop into one of the country’s most promising left-backs. After being part of Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup squad, he has gained valuable experience and is expected to cement his place in the starting XI.
Defensive midfield: Sphephelo ‘Yaya’ Sithole
The Portugal-based midfielder has been linked with Chiefs and has previously indicated he would be open to joining the club. While a move may be difficult to complete, his arrival would significantly strengthen Amakhosi’s midfield with his energy, defensive awareness and international experience.
Central midfield: Lebohang Maboe
Maboe was one of Kaizer Chiefs’ most consistent performers last season and is expected to remain a key figure. Although he missed out on Bafana Bafana’s World Cup squad, his experience and leadership will be crucial if the Glamour Boys are to challenge for the league title.
Attacking midfield: Mduduzi Shabalala
Shabalala has shown flashes of brilliance but has struggled for consistency. Surrounded by quality players in a settled system, the talented playmaker could finally enjoy a breakthrough campaign.

Left wing: Devin Titus
Titus has regularly troubled Chiefs in recent seasons and would be an excellent addition to their attack. His pace, creativity and direct running would give Amakhosi another dangerous option out wide while easing the creative burden on Shabalala.
Right wing: Wandile Duba
Although naturally a striker, Duba has the pace and movement to thrive from a wide position. His direct style has troubled defenders, and with better service around him, he has the potential to reach double figures for goals next season.
Striker: Peter Shalulile
Kaizer Chiefs still need a proven goalscorer if they are to compete for the biggest trophies this coming season. Shalulile offers goals, relentless work rate and a winning mentality built during his successful spell at Mamelodi Sundowns.
His presence would not only increase Chiefs’ goal threat but also create more opportunities for players like Shabalala and Duba while taking pressure off Flávio Silva.
