Meanwhile, the 41-year-old is also considering the Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference.
The Cavaliers, where he has already spent 11 years across two spells, are the favourites to sign him in free agency.
However, several NBA executives expect him to stay in the West with a controversial move to Golden State.

Despite his rivalry with the Warriors during his second stint with the Cavaliers, James is reportedly open to joining Golden State.
He would enjoy playing alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, and he has a good relationship with head coach Steve Kerr.
With Jimmy Butler (once he returns from injury), Brandin Podziemski, and Kristaps Porzingis also on the roster, the Warriors would be contenders with James.
Regardless of the team’s success, Golden State would be an entertaining final chapter of James’s legendary NBA career.
The move suddenly appears more realistic, as several NBA executives are “skeptical” of reports that James is returning to Cleveland.
“Multiple Western Conference executives told Front Office Sports they expect James to sign with the Warriors over the Cavaliers.”
This suggests that Draymond Green’s rejection of his $27.7 million player option was part of the bigger picture.
Perhaps James really is going to spend the final season or two with the team that he had his greatest battle against.
