Willie Cauley-Stein is preparing for what he says will be the final chapter of his basketball career, announcing that this summer’s run with La Familia in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) will be his “last ride.”

Cauley-Stein said the decision isn’t about losing his love for the game, but about ending his playing career on his own terms while surrounded by former Wildcats and passionate Kentucky fans.

“I think just like — not being on an active roster is just the hardest thing, staying in shape,” Cauley-Stein told KSR. “To take two months and just hurry up and get in shape every year, it’s just hard. I don’t want to do it.”

You can’t blame him, but what a fun ride it has been.

His biggest motivation is helping La Familia finally get past rival The Ville after last year’s heated matchup, and he adds that the team’s focus is on winning the $2 million TBT prize while giving fans one final, memorable run.

The former SEC Defensive Player of the Year hopes the atmosphere will be unforgettable, saying he wants to soak in every moment because it may be the last time he ever picks up a basketball in competition.

While he plans to remain involved with the program in some capacity, Cauley-Stein is determined to make this farewell count, closing the book on a career that began in Lexington and now comes full circle with one final run in blue and white.

Make sure you go out and see him one more time!
