The Suns dealt Grayson Allen, Royce O’Neale and a 2033 unprotected first-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets for Bridges, a first-round pick in 2029 and a second-round pick in 2027. The Arizona Republic confirmed the trade on June 28 and the Suns announced it on July 13.
“Miles has established himself as a highly productive player whose game continues to evolve,” said Suns general manager Brian Gregory in a July 13 news release. “His elite athleticism, strength and versatility allow him to impact the game on both ends of the floor. He embodies the grit, competitiveness and work ethic that fit our identity, and we’re excited to welcome him to Phoenix.”
The 6-7, 225-pound Bridges averaged 17.1 points in 77 games in helping the Hornets post their first winning record at 44-38 since the 2021-22 season.
Gregory also recognized the contributions of Allen and O’Neale, who each spent their previous three seasons with the Suns.
“We also want to thank Grayson and Royce for the impact they made in Phoenix,” Gregory added in the July 13 news release. “Both played important roles in helping us build our foundation, and we appreciate everything they brought to our team. We wish them and their families all the best.”
Bridges, 28, will wear No. 22, the same number he sported at Michigan State, after wearing No. 0 in his seven seasons playing for the Hornets.
Deandre Ayton wore No. 22 in his five seasons in Phoenix.
Ryan Dunn has worn No. 0 in his two years with the Suns.
Phoenix has yet to officially announce the addition of Luke Kennard, a move that is tied to the Bridges trade.
The Suns are using a $6.1-million mid-level exception on Kennard, who has agreed to a two-year, $13-million deal with a player option on the second year.
They couldn’t use that mid-level tax exception on Kennard until the Bridges trade went through.
Bridges and Kennard attended Phoenix’s first Summer League game on July 10 against the Portland Trail Blazers at Cox Pavilion. The Suns won in comeback fashion, 81-79.
Bridges, 28, was involved in a domestic violence incident with the mother of his children, for which the NBA served him with a 30-game suspension without pay in April 2023.
He was initially charged with three felonies related to the incident. He pleaded no contest to a felony charge of injuring a child's parent and was sentenced to three years of probation and no jail time. The other two felony charges were dropped.
He missed the entire 2022-23 season. In recognition of that outcome, the NBA deemed 20 games of the suspension had already been served.
