Julián Alvarez vowed to help lead Argentina all the way again after his goal of the tournament contender downed the Swiss and set up a World Cup semi-final with England.

For the first time in the 2026 edition, Lionel Messi failed to score for the holders, but Alvarez still had a spark of magic in extra-time when he curled the ball into the top corner of the net from 20 metres. The Albiceleste eventually won through 3-1.

"Very happy, above all. We kept trying until the end, things got difficult even though we had an extra man," the forward told reporters after Breel Embolo's second booking for diving on 72 minutes.

"We knew that if we kept going all together, the goal was going to come, and that's how it was. Obviously we would have preferred to win it earlier, but we know it's not easy."

Argentina have scrambled their way into the last four after scrappy 3-2 wins over Cape Verde and Egypt were followed by another nail-biter against Switzerland.

Now a meeting with England in Atlanta on Wednesday awaits and Alvarez already has his eye on back-to-back World Cup trophies.

"All the matches at the World Cup have been like this. And well, with two more to go, we're going to go all out for it," he said.
