Following a stellar career with the UCLA Bruins, Roch Cholowsky became the third UCLA player taken with the first overall pick in the MLB Draft with the Chicago White Sox snagging Cholowsky.
Expectations are high for Cholowsky after crushing college pitching throughout his entire Bruin career. Cholowsky did it on a winning team, helping UCLA win back-to-back Big Ten Conference titles.

The White Sox are enjoying a comeback season, sitting in first place in the American League Central. While Cholowsky won’t be joining the team this year, when he is called up, he’ll be starting his MLB career on a team that has postseason aspirations.
USA TODAY writer Gabe Lacques gave the White Sox an A- grade for their selection of Cholowsky.
“Here’s to not overthinking it. Cholowsky’s junior year might not have exceeded the sophomore season that set him up as the 1/1 in waiting,” Lacques said. “He’s still the surest thing with a good enough ceiling out of the consensus top three to six. And for a franchise on the upswing, Cholowsky could help as soon as 2027.”
MLB.com writer Jonathan Mayo was a bit more optimistic about the selection of Cholowsky.
“Considered the best college shortstop to enter pro ball since Troy Tulowitzki in 2005, Cholowsky was at, or near, the very top of Draft boards from wire-to-wire,” Mayo said. “He hit 44 homers over the last two seasons for the Bruins and was a Golden Spikes Award finalist this year. It came down to a decision between Cholowsky and Texas high school shortstop Grady Emerson here, and the White Sox took it down to the wire before opting for the college guy who has the chance to make it to Chicago in a hurry, and who will play shortstop for a very long time.”
