Boston Celtics Emerge as Possible San Antonio Spurs Trade Partner
· Yahoo Sports
After signing Tobias Harris to a two-year, $31 million deal, the San Antonio Spurs are largely expected to stand pat this offseason. They re-signed both Julian Champagnie and Harrison Barnes, and drafted Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed in the first round.
However, as long as players like Keldon Johnson and De'Aaron Fox are on the roster, the Spurs won't be able to escape trade rumors. Fox, of course, is an established All-Star, and Johnson is a high-end bench piece who can bring rebounding and energy to any roster.

With Johnson only owed $17.5 million next season before he hits free agency, the Spurs are expected to field some interest, and one team has made financial flexibility a key priority.

Celtics Emerge as Keldon Johnson SuitorsIn the wake of trading Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers, the Boston Celtics have made it clear that they want to target players on team-friendly salaries to avoid paying the luxury tax and retaining as much financial flexibility as possible.
On the court, Boston wants to surround Jayson Tatum with players who can make him better. That means guys who can defend, rebound, and thrive off-ball.
Johnson, apparenlty, fits.
The Celtics want to surround Jayson Tatum with depth and role players, not to bring in another star to split shots with, per @SeanDeveney.

Boston’s likely targets are Herb Jones, Keldon Johnson, or "players of that range." pic.twitter.com/VrpC6VIX01
Now, it's worth noting that Polymarket is a "prediction market," basically a de facto casino, and should not be trusted with reporting actual news. Heavy's Sean Deveney, however, might be onto something.
"The Celtics are thin at power forward, with Jayson Tatum and Hauser slated to play the bulk of the minutes there, even if somewhat out of position," he wrote. "If the Celtics aren’t concerned about that (or if they play George at the 4), a pursuit of Keldon Johnson from San Antonio, Herbert Jones from the Pels or Lu Dort from the Thunder could be an opportunity to add a relatively young piece."
In order to match Johnson's salary, Boston would have to send over a package worth around $18 million. That means the Celtics would have to part with someone like Sam Hauser, or San Antonio would have to pony up for someone like Derrick White, who would undoubtedly cost draft picks and other assets.
Fans would love to see that reunion, but until the Spurs move on from De'Aaron Fox, it seems unlikely that they would be willing to make a trade that massive.
