Tragic year for local cops
The crash was the latest in a series of police tragedies this spring and summer.
OPP motorcycle cop Sgt. Brandon Malcolm , 33, died in a crash on Hwy. 401 in Cobourg on April 27.
On June 9, Const. Tarun Bali , of the James Bay OPP Detachment and originally from Brampton, was killed while laying out a spike belt in an attempt to stop a suspect who had fled custody at a hospital. A suspect was charged with first-degree murder.
Two days later, Toronto Police Emergency Task Force Const. Marc Pinizzotto , 43, was shot to death during the execution of a search warrant in North York connected to the March 11 shooting at the U.S. Consulate as well as Jewish targets across the region. A suspect was charged with first-degree murder.
Montreal Police Const. Mohamed Lamine Benredouane , 34, was also gunned down on June 22 while trying to stop an active shooter in the city’s Cote-des-Neiges neighbourhood. The alleged shooter was shot to death by police.
Benredouane was honoured with a procession Tuesday in Montreal that saw thousands of first responders line the street’s to the city’s Bell Centre.
During this time, there were also officers wounded or shot at in the line of duty.
In each of those cases, the officers were also killed in the line of duty. In this case, the officer who died and the one clinging to life had their whole careers in policing ahead of them. They were recently hired and merely on their way to the college and preparing to serve.
It’s devastating to think something like this could happen. But it is a reminder of how fragile life is.
There will be more to say as more information becomes available. For now, Canadian hearts are with the embattled policing community and specifically Durham police.
