‘Looks Like a Troubled Person’ — Super Bowl Champion Offers Advice to 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk As He Burns Bridges

The saga involving Brandon Aiyuk gained a new and unexpected twist during the weekend. The wide receiver has said multiple times he wanted to join the Washington Commanders, but suddenly, he has turned against Jayden Daniels, calling him out on social media and unfollowing him. The controversy continues.

Aiyuk can’t currently play. He’s currently on the San Francisco 49ers reserve/left squad list and hasn’t filed the paperwork required to be reinstated. His relationship with the 49ers is broken beyond repair, and while he has spoken on his Instagram about joining the Commanders, he’s still tied to another franchise.

The recent attacks on Daniels could change things. With each new social media episode, those around the NFL might wonder if signing him is worth the headache. No team wants distractions around the locker room, no matter how good the player is.

ESPN analyst Jason McCourty, a former Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots, knows a lot about the importance of leaving noise outside the organization. His advice to Aiyuk is simple: shut up, turn the phone off, and go to work:

“If I was his friend, I would just say, ‘Just put the phone down, just go work out and don’t say anything’… From the outside looking in, it looks like a troubled person who’s posting videos and doing all these things.

I hope somebody does take a flyer and signs him on a veteran minimum so that he can be back in a locker room. I think that’s such a key component of being back around guys, being on routine, and being with people who have your best interest in mind,” McCourty said.

The same advice has been given by former NFL executives, such as Andrew Brandt, who worked for the Green Bay Packers for a decade. Brandt recently noted how the Commanders, Aiyuk’s preferred destination, might not pursue him given his antics.

“Now he’s making Instagram videos, just begging the 49ers to cut him, bashing the 49ers, bashing John Lynch, bashing his agent, bashing the NFLPA, and talking about signing with the Commanders… And I’m just thinking… anyone associated with the Commanders, you want that?” Brandt recently said.

Aiyuk remains tied to the 49ers, who have no incentive to release him without any guaranteed money remaining. While he won’t play for the team, they could still look to recoup something via trade.
