The team has made many transactions between the 2026 NFL Draft and free agency this offseason. Not to mention, Sean McDermott was fired as head coach and Joe Brady was promoted to the position.

Because of their efforts, there is every reason to believe Buffalo's defense will be better in 2026.

Here are Bills Wire's three reasons why the team's defense will improve next season:

Coordinator change

Sean McDermott was previously head coach not the defensive coordinator, but now a DC in Jim Leonhard is calling the shots on that side of the ball in 2026. Known for his 3-4 defensive scheme and playing an aggressive style of game, those changes could boost Buffalo's defense right away.

Injury bug hope

In terms of a big hope a bit here... it is a simple one. The Bills should find it difficult being as injured on defense as they were last season come 2026. Importance pieces such as defensive tackle Ed Oliver, linebacker Terrel Bernard and others missed extensive playing time last year.

That can't happen again, can it? Assuming it does not, it will be a big boost.

Rookies already pushing

It is very early but it is a good sign for the defense that young players are pushing for playing time already during spring practices. A few rookies in the likes of cornerback Davison Igbinosun and linebacker Kaleb Elarms-Orr are standing out.

That's not just good for them, but their efforts should bring the best out of others as well.
