The New England Patriots are showing their international fans some love ahead of Sunday’s major match between Mexico and England at Mexico City Stadium (previously named Estadio Azteca).

While most New England Patriots fans are focused on the United States’ match against Belgium on Monday night in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it’s also a pretty big Sunday for soccer.

With England playing Mexico at Estadio Banorte (previously Estadio Azteca and temporarily named Mexico City Stadium), the stage is set for one of the best moments of the World Cup. And the Patriots found a way to involve themselves in it.

Patriots account takes hilarious stance for Mexico-England

The Patriots have a large fanbase in Mexico, and its official “Patriots Español” (Patriots in Spanish) account posted a official account asking fans to refer to them as just Patriots and omit “England” for the day.

“As a show of support to Mexico’s National Team in its most important game of the century, we request that for this weekend you don’t mention that we’re from New England,” the statement reads. “Until the game is over, we’re the Patriots and that’s it. No more. Thank you, we’re all Patriots, we’re all Mexico.”

The statement is clearly meant as a lighthearted show of support, but one that will be largely appreciated by the Patriots’ Mexican fans.

Fans in social media have made plenty of similar jokes, (jokingly) leaving English-race dogs out of houses and even getting rid of Worcestershire sauce. The latter is known in Mexico as “English sauce” and is often used for beer-based drinks like the “michelada.”

This Sunday’s match versus England is indeed the most important game Mexico played in this century, if not ever. Mexico has not gotten to the quarterfinals since 1986, when the World Cup was also played in Mexico.

They enter the match with four wins and no goals against, which has only been done by Italy in World Cup history back in 1990. A win on Sunday would spark serious World Cup hopes for Mexico thanks to their outstanding play so far, particularly during their win against Ecuador in the knockout round.

The Patriots have played twice in Mexico’s Estadio Azteca. Once in 2017 for a 33-8 regular season win over the Oakland Raiders and another in the 1998 preseason against the Dallas Cowboys.
