Training camp will help Jets sort through cornerback competition

The New York Jets had to make some changes at cornerback this offseason after failing to record a single interception in 2025. There are several returning defenders at the position, but Darren Mougey also brought in some new faces. The Jets signed Nahshon Wright in free agency and drafted D'Angelo Ponds.

There's going to be loads of competition for reps at cornerback. Training camp should help head coach Aaron Glenn settle some of the perceived position battles. Whoever takes best advantage of practice opportunities will carve out roles in the Jets' secondary.

Veteran Brandon Stephens is a returning boundary defender. Stephens shouldn't be guaranteed anything, as he played rather average last season, but he's probably a favorite to claim one starting spot.

The newcomer Wright could start opposite him, but sophomore Azareye'h Thomas is competing. If Thomas takes a big step forward, he should be named a starter.

Jarvis Brownlee is the favorite to defend the nickel again after the Jets traded for him midseason 2025. Ponds, a top-50 pick, adds way more pressure to Brownlee's role than he faced last season. If the Jets could get both Brownlee and Ponds on the field, they'd have two fiery corners with terrific energy.

The Jets have tons to sort through at cornerback this summer.
