Man charged in Oshawa stabbing; man accused of opening fire on vehicle

A 30-year-old man is facing multiple charges following a stabbing in an Oshawa parking lot.
On June 14, around 10:30 p.m., Durham Regional Police say officers responded to the area of Simcoe and John Sts. after reports of a large group of people being involved in a physical fight.
Once on scene, police located one male suffering from minor injuries who was taken to a local hospital and one male suffering from multiple stab wounds who was taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre in serious but non-life-threatening condition – later upgraded to stable condition.
On Wednesday, Steven Edward McCarthy, of no fixed address, was found in Oshawa and is facing two charges of administering a noxious substance and breach of probation, and one count each of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possess weapon dangerous and possess schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking,
At the time of the incident, the accused was on weapons prohibition conditions.

MAN ACCUSED OF SHOOTING UP VEHICLE IN GEORGETOWN
A 30-year-old man faces charges after a car was shot at i n the parking lot at Dominion Gardens Park in Georgetown on Monday.
Halton Regional Police say officers who responded to the scene around 5:15 p.m. and confirmed multiple shots were fired at a parked vehicle while there were members of the public in the area.
No one was struck and there were no reported physical injuries.
Investigators believe this was a targeted shooting.
A suspect was arrested on Tuesday.
Sattya Him, of Mississauga, is charged with two counts of attempt murder and discharge firearm with intent and one count each of unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, point firearm and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

BOATER FACES IMPAIRED CHARGES AFTER OSHAWA MAN DROWNS
The Peterborough County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police says a 39-year-old Oshawa man drowned on Tuesday afternoon after falling off a boat in the Otonabee River.
Emergency responders went to the scene around 2:30 p.m. after being advised the boat carrying the victim, who was not wearing a life jacket, had been travelling east on the river when another boat went by at which point one of the four individuals on the boat fell into the water.
A nearby OPP marine unit made contact with the three remaining individuals who were still on the boat near the location the person went into the water and it was determined they had allegedly been consuming alcohol. An officer demanded the vessel operator provide a breath sample into an Approved Screening Device.
The operator complied with the demand, was arrested and taken to the Peterborough County OPP detachment for further testing.
Jayatharssan Yogaratnam was subsequently charged with operation causing death and operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
Shortly before 9 p.m., the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit divers located the body of the victim.

GIRL, 4, HIT BY CAR IN AJAX
A four-year-old female pedestrian suffered serious injuries following a single vehicle collision in Ajax on Tuesday.
Durham Regional Police say officers responded to the area of Keith Wright Cr. and Gillett Dr. around 8:15 p.m. after the young girl was struck by a Honda Civic when she crossed the street.
The victim taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The 16-year-old driver and 38-year-old passenger of the Honda did not suffer any injuries and remained on scene for the investigation.

BOY, 16, CHARGED FOLLOWING WHITBY CRASHA 16-year-old boy facing charges following an investigation into a crash that occurred last month in Whitby.
Durham Regional Police say officers responded to a single vehicle collision on Duffs Rd. south of Townline Rd. W. – north of Brooklin – around 8:30 p.m. on June 11.
Police say an Audi sedan was travelling north on Duffs Rd. when it lost control, went off the roadway, and caught fire.
Officers located two occupants suffering from injuries.
A 16-year-old boy suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre. His condition has since been upgraded to stable.
As the driver of the Audi, he was subsequently charged with dangerous operation and stunt driving.
A 17-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

MAN FALLS OVERBOARD AND DROWNS IN MUSKOKA LAKE
Ontario Provincial Police have located the body of a 67-year-old Bracebridge man who fell overboard near Sandy Bay in Bracebridge on Wednesday.
Bracebridge OPP officers, along with the OPP Marine Unit, responded to a distress call indicating a person had fallen out of their vessel and failed to surface around 5:45 p.m.
The OPP say a couple had been returning to Bracebridge in their boat and while in the area of Sandy Bay near Bowyers Beach, on Lake Muskoka, the weather quickly changed, making navigation difficult.
Police conducted a search of the water and shore and on Thursday, just before 12 p.m., the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, with assistance from OPP Aviation support, recovered the man’s body.

EMERGENCY CALLS SPIKE IN TORONTO ON CANADA DAY
Toronto Fire Services says it experienced a significant spike in emergency calls on Canada Day, responding to at least 746 incidents during a 24-hour period, which is 51% greater than the three-year average.
“Through a busy Canada Day, our crews and communications staff remained focused on keeping #Toronto safe,” TFS wrote in a social media post shared Thursday.
Staff fielded 203 fire suppression calls, 417 medical calls, 56 hazmat/CBRNE/carbon monoxide calls, and 39 rescue calls.
