The New Jersey Devils have made sure their captain is here to stay; Nico Hischier and the Devils agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension at the start of the NHL's free agency craze.

New Jersey General Manager Sunny Mehta made the announcement at noon EST on the afternoon of July 1 — when the new League Year officially started — with the deal being worth  $58,500,000. It features an $11,700,000 average annual value. Hischier only had just one year remaining on his former seven-year contract ($7,250,000), of which he signed in Oct., 2019. At 27, he currently has a career total of 488 points across 199 goals and 289 assists so far.

At the media availability following the announcement of his latest deal, Hischier said one of his biggest remaining career goals is to hoist the coveted Stanely Cup with the Devils.

"My biggest goal is winning a cup with New Jersey, and that hasn't changed," Hischier said.

New Jersey Devils fans react to latest deal involving Nico Hischier

A fan-favorite, Hischier was originally drafted by New Jersey at No. 1 overall back in the 2017 NHL Draft and has played his entire career thus far with the Devils.

For the fans, the latest news surrounding Hischier's was certainly applauded across social media.

"THATS OUR FOREVER CAPTAIN!!!!!!" Devils' fan Faith exclaimed on X.

"THE Captain!!" another said.

"MY CAPTAINNNNNNNN DEVIL FOR LIFE NICO HISCHIER," one New Jersey fan said on social media in all caps.

As a result of his new deal, Hischier now becomes the highest paid player in Devils' history and is tied for the longest tenured player in New Jersey. This latest development comes after the Switzerland native completed his ninth NHL season with New Jersey since his NHL debut in 2017.

The captain also served as an alternate captain for his country at the most recent Winter Olympics — the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

"Oh captain my captain!!! Fantastic news," one fan said online.

"God I love this man," said another in reference to Hischier.

Fans have also praised Mehta for this latest development, as Mehta was only recently named to replace former-GM Tom Fitzgerald in mid-April.

"I love Sunny," one Devils fan posted.

"I’ll kiss you sunny," said another.

Mehta said in the Devils' press release on the extension that ensuring Hischier remains a leader for New Jersey both on and off the ice has been one of his top priorities.

"When I took this job, I knew that Nico was one of the core pieces that I definitely wanted as part of our future,” said Mehta. "The way he plays the game, his leadership, and selflessness are qualities we value for this team. We all look forward to him leading this franchise, on and off the ice, for years to come."

In addition to being a fan-favorite for his captaincy, Hischier is also beloved due to his production. The center was one of only five members of the Devils' roster to play in all 82 regular-season games last season and led the Devils with 11 power-play goals throughout 2025-26.

"We want 13 in the rafters," said one last New Jersey follower.

Hischier's new extension will kick in for the 2027-28 season. He is the 12th player in the history of New Jersey to wear the "C" and is expected to surpass 500 career points next season.
