Shoja Khalilzadeh scored in the third minute of stoppage time, putting Iran up 2-1 over Egypt and setting off pandemonium throughout the stadium. And then the most dreaded words in soccer were seen.

Khalilzadeh was eventually ruled offside by the slightest of margins. Still, offside is offside and the goal was waved off. One of the Egypt players bent down and kissed the grass in relief as half the stadium howled.

Iran would have another chance, banging a shot off the crossbar, but they could never find the game-winner that counted.
