The Montreal Canadiens have emerged as a serious contender in the race for Columbus Blue Jackets winger Kirill Marchenko.
Multiple NHL insiders reported growing trade interest as uncertainty continues surrounding the forward’s long-term future in Columbus. The developments add another major storyline to an already busy offseason following the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign.

NHL analyst Kevin Weekes first reported the contract uncertainty on X. He wrote, “This literally off the press, Marchenko’s camp tells me that as of now he’s unlikely to re sign with @BlueJacketsNHL as of now.”
The report immediately fueled speculation that Columbus could explore trade options before extension talks progress.

NHL analyst David Pagnotta added another layer to the story shortly afterward. He wrote on X, “In addition to the Canadiens having serious interest in Marchenko, hearing the Mammoth are also knocking on that door.”

Marchenko remains one of Columbus’ most productive forwards despite a slight statistical decline. He recorded 27 goals, 40 assists, and 67 points in 76 games during 2025-26. He also led the Blue Jackets in goals for the third straight season. His consistency makes him an attractive option for contenders seeking proven top-six scoring.

Columbus faces a far different situation entering the offseason. The Blue Jackets finished 40-30-12 and missed the playoffs for a sixth consecutive season. Their power play ranked 22nd, while the penalty kill finished 28th. Reports involving Marchenko, Zach Werenski, and Elvis Merzļikins have raised questions about the team’s direction.

Blue Jackets reporter Jeff Svoboda later shared General Manager Don Waddell’s response on X. He wrote, “GM Don Waddell said he heard from Kirill Marchenko’s agent today, hoping to connect next week to talk about the wing’s future. Saw today’s report but did not want to comment. In addition, the plan is still to meet with Zach Werenski and his representation after the draft.”
That response leaves the situation unresolved, but trade speculation is unlikely to disappear until Columbus determines whether Marchenko remains part of its long-term plans.
