Spain took the group lead with a commanding win over Saudi Arabia, while Uruguay settled for a draw with Cape Verde in what was viewed as a major disappointment. Now, Uruguay has one last chance to get to the top of the group.

As Group H play wraps up on Friday, both Spain and Uruguay still have plenty on the line.

Here's a look at how Friday's Group H match between Spain and Uruguay could impact the World Cup bracket.

Group H standings, explained

Spain leads Group H with four points through two matches, with Uruguay sitting second and in position to advance as it stands now.

Both teams are at risk, however. While four points will be enough for Spain to reach the knockout stage, the Spanish team hasn't yet secured a top-two spot in the group and is at risk of falling to third with a loss on Friday night.

Uruguay, meanwhile, is at risk of being surpassed for a top-two spot without a win over Spain; even a tie might not be enough to officially secure a spot in the knockout stage.

Both Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia are still in contention, and a winner in that matchup would be positioned to advance regardless of where they wind up in the Group H standings.

Spain vs. Uruguay scenarios for Group H

How could Spain win Group I?

Spain simply needs a win over Uruguay to win Group H, though a draw would very likely give Spain the group wins as well.

In the event of a draw, only a Cape Verde win by at least four goals would prevent Spain from winning Group H. Cape Verde could win on Friday, but that kind of margin would be a massive surprise.

A loss would guarantee Spain finishes no higher than second in Group H, as Uruguay would jump to five points. In that scenario, only Uruguay or Cape Verde could win the group.

How could Uruguay win Group I?

Uruguay must defeat Spain to win Group I, and even then a group win is not guaranteed.

While a win would give Uruguay five points and guarantee a top-two spot in the group, Uruguay enters Friday even with Cape Verde in points and goal differential. Only one additional goal puts Uruguay in front of Cape Verde in the next tiebreaker, goals for, so Cape Verde could theoretically beat Saudi Arabia and pull ahead of Uruguay on the goal differential or goals for tiebreaker.

Who will Spain and Uruguay play in the knockout stage?

Pathway for Group H winner

The winner of Group H will face the runner-up from Group J in the Round of 32 in Los Angeles on Thursday, July 2. That's Austria as it stands now, though Algeria can jump to the runner-up spot with a win over Austria in their Group J finale.

If the Group H winner advances, it wouldn't have to face a group winner in the Round of 16, either, as the runners-up from Groups K and L will meet for the right to play either the Group H winner or Group J runner-up.

Pathway for Group H runner-up

The Group H runner-up will run into a potential buzzsaw, as Argentina is waiting for whichever team finishes second after Friday's matches.

The match is set for Friday, July 3, in Miami, where Messi has enjoyed his time in the MLS, so it would be a daunting matchup for any team.

If the Group H runner-up advances to the Round of 16, a soft landing could await, as Australia and the Group G runner-up will meet in the same portion of the bracket for the right to face either Argentina or the Group H winner.
