Brother of Commanders' linebacker selected in 2026 NBA Draft

· Yahoo Sports

One of the Washington Commanders' surprise moves this offseason was bringing in linebacker Odafe Oweh. That they brought him in wasn't the surprising part, but his $100 million contract with $68 million in guarantees definitely raised some eyebrows.

A 2021 first-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens, Oweh was traded last October to the Los Angeles Chargers. After starting slow with Baltimore, Oweh was excellent for the Chargers, recording 7.5 sacks and 8 tackles for loss in 12 regular-season games.

Oweh isn't the only professional athlete in his family, though. His younger brother, Otega Oweh, was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the No. 41 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft on Wednesday night. The older Oweh posted the moment he was drafted on his Instagram.

Any speaking in the video is difficult to make out, especially when the pick is announced, and everyone in attendance loses their minds. Otega was actually drafted by the Miami Heat, who later traded his rights to the Thunder.

It's a full-circle moment for the younger Oweh, who began his collegiate career at the University of Oklahoma. He played two seasons with the Sooners before transferring to the University of Kentucky, where he played for the Wildcats. He initially declared for the 2025 NBA draft while retaining the right to return to college, and eventually withdrew his name from the draft and returned to Kentucky to play his senior season.

Odafe has joined a team with a serious shot at the postseason, and Otega will join a team that faced the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals this year. You can believe there's a race to see who's going to get a championship first at the professional level between these two brothers. If all goes as expected with the Commanders this year, it could be a tight race.
