The Los Angeles Angels are one of the worst teams in all of Major League Baseball this season, and with Mike Trout on the injured list, it seems impossible for even the Angels to mount a comeback in the weak AL Wild Card field this season.

So, with the Angels very likely to finish near the bottom of the standings, it would not be a surprise if they acted as trade deadline sellers. But there's an issue with this line of thinking.

According to MLB insider Robert Murray of Fansided.com, the Angels might be sellers this season, but not with some of their bigger-name, controllable assets, despite being in dire need of a rebuild.

Angels projected to hold onto controllable trade chips despite rebuild need

"The Angels need to seriously consider a rebuild," Murray writes. "I just don't believe this is the year it comes."

While the Angels really should be looking to rebuild this team as soon as possible, Arte Moreno might not want to sell this summer.

This is a bleak outlook for the future of the franchise, as the Angels might not have a better chance to get some truly incredible returns in the trade market for their stars.

While a Trout trade is incredibly unlikely, with the future Hall of Famer controlling whether he's dealt or not, the Angels should have the door open to a bunch of other intriguing assets who are controllable beyond 2026.

Reid Detmers, Jose Soriano, and Jo Adell are the three top trade targets this summer, which could draw significant interest. Controllable starters through the 2028 season, like Detmers and Soriano, will be very expensive in trade talks.

Adell, a right-handed hitting outfielder with solid power and solid fielding, would be someone who could bring back a good return. He's also under control for the 2027 season, which would further increase his trade value.

But, if Murray doesn't believe the Angels will act as full-blown sellers, and not conduct a firesale to kick-start a rebuild, then these three controllable stars might not be on the move.

This might be a bleak trade deadline for the Angels if Murray's projection holds. Moreno and the Angels should enter a rebuild, as this team isn't close to good enough right now. But this upcoming deadline isn't looking very promising right now.
