Magic hire Long Island Nets coach Mfon Udofia

The Brooklyn Nets organization is losing one of its rising coaching talents.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Orlando Magic are hiring Mfon Udofia as an assistant coach on Sean Sweeney's new staff. Udofia joins Riley Crean and DJ Bakker as the Magic's latest additions as Sweeney begins building his coaching group in Orlando.

For the Nets, it's another example of how respected the organization's developmental program has become around the league.
Udofia was named head coach of the Long Island Nets, Brooklyn's G League affiliate, in July 2023. During his three seasons as head coach, he made a significant impact, becoming the winningest coach in Long Island Nets history. His work developing players and leading Long Island to success helped raise his profile around the league.
That development was evident during the 2025-26 season, when three Long Island Nets players earned NBA call-ups under Udofia's watch, further highlighting his ability to prepare players for opportunities at the next level.
When Udofia was hired, Long Island Nets general manager J.R. Holden praised his energy and leadership, saying the organization believed his passion for the game and dynamic coaching style made him the right person to lead Brooklyn's development program.
Before taking over in Long Island, Udofia spent the 2022-23 season as an assistant coach with the Ontario Clippers in the G League. He also built a lengthy resume across multiple developmental stops, including assistant coaching roles with the Austin Spurs, College Park Skyhawks, Delaware 87ers, and other G League organizations.
His experience extends beyond the NBA pipeline as well. Udofia served as head coach of the Nigerian national team during the 2021 FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers and was an assistant coach for Nigeria at the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
At 35 years old, Udofia has already built an extensive coaching resume that includes stops across the G League and international basketball.
Before entering coaching, he was a standout guard at Georgia Tech, where he played four seasons and appeared in 128 games. He averaged 7.6 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 25.4 minutes per game. After declaring for the 2013 NBA Draft and going undrafted, Udofia shifted his focus toward coaching, a decision that has paid off throughout the last decade.
Udofia's departure leaves Long Island searching for its next head coach, but it also highlights the value the Nets organization places on player and coach development. After three successful seasons leading Brooklyn's G League affiliate, Udofia now gets an opportunity to continue his rise at the NBA level.
He becomes the latest member of the Nets organization to earn a promotion elsewhere, this time joining Sean Sweeney's staff in Orlando.
