While much of the post-race conversation centered on Corey Heim’s stunning first NASCAR Cup Series victory at Naval Base Coronado, Hamlin found himself talking about something else entirely: the way Reddick handled the decisive moment of the race.
As Heim chased down his 23XI Racing teammate in the closing laps, the two drivers raced side-by-side for the lead. Heim eventually completed the winning pass, and moments later Reddick’s day unraveled completely when a flat tire dropped him to a 25th-place finish.
Many drivers in that situation might have responded differently.
Hamlin noticed that Reddick didn’t.

When asked about the battle between the two 23XI Racing drivers, Hamlin pointed to a moment that could have easily been overlooked amid the excitement of Heim’s breakthrough victory.
“I think it speaks a lot to Tyler’s character, right?” Hamlin said. “I mean, he apparently felt like Corey raced him very clean, got around him clean. And when he tried to pass him back clean, he didn’t, so he wanted to hit the reset button and try it again.”
The comment offered a revealing glimpse into how Hamlin viewed the exchange.
Reddick had every reason to be aggressive. He entered the weekend leading the Cup Series standings and appeared to have one of the fastest cars in the field. A victory would have extended his advantage over the rest of the championship contenders.
Instead, Hamlin believes Reddick made a conscious decision not to force the issue after Heim completed the pass.
That decision ultimately cost him the opportunity to immediately reclaim the lead, but Hamlin saw it as something more important.
“I’m very proud of that, because it’s very easy when you’re racing for the win to just say ‘I’ll say I’m sorry later.’ But it speaks a lot to the character of Tyler Reddick.”
A Tough Day Got Even Tougher for the Points Leader
The loss was particularly painful given how the afternoon ended.
Reddick later accepted responsibility for his result, saying, “Today’s result’s on me.”
After starting from the rear following unapproved adjustments, he methodically worked his way through the field and looked poised to contend for the victory. Instead, contact with Heim during the battle for the lead and a late tire issue left him with a disappointing finish and a significantly reduced points cushion.
His lead atop the Cup Series standings now sits at just eight points over Hamlin.
Yet Hamlin’s comments suggest that inside the 23XI Racing camp, the focus wasn’t solely on the final running order.
Heim delivered the first Cup Series victory of his career. Reddick walked away without the trophy he appeared capable of winning.
But according to Hamlin, Reddick also left San Diego with something that doesn’t show up in the standings.
The co-owner of 23XI Racing believes his driver demonstrated exactly the kind of sportsmanship and judgment that can be difficult to find when a NASCAR Cup Series victory is on the line.
And in Hamlin’s eyes, that may have been worth recognizing even on a day that ended in disappointment.
