Atlanta Falcons 2026 training camp position battle to watch

NFL teams have wrapped up their respective organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamps, and after a near month-long break, they’ll pick things back up near the end of July for training camp.

The first preseason game takes place on Thursday, Aug. 6 on NBC when the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals face off in the Hall of Fame Game. The rest of the preseason’s first week will take place from Aug. 13-15, followed by Week 2 on Aug. 20-23, and Week 3 on Aug. 27-29.

But before the preseason gets underway, teams must first report to training camp. The Atlanta Falcons are set to report to camp on July 31, and below is their biggest position battle to watch this summer.

Position Battle: Quarterback | Tua Tagovailoa vs. Michael Penix Jr.

Nothing sends a message to Penix Jr., the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 draft, like adding a former $200 million QB who was also a top-five pick just a few years ago.

That’s exactly what the Falcons did in adding Tagovailoa, who was released by the Miami Dolphins as part of a wide-sweeping regime change this offseason. The 28-year-old passer has dealt with his share of concussions over his NFL career, but when healthy, he’s shown himself to be an above-average QB.

Penix Jr. has two years in Atlanta’s system, and he’s already developed a rapport with WR1 Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts. The problem is he hasn’t shown much consistency or development in that time.

Tagovailoa may have reached his NFL ceiling, but at least fans know what that ceiling is. The Alabama alum is 12 games above .500 as an NFL starter (44-32), and he’s one of the more accurate QBs in the NFL — he has a career completion percentage of 68 and he led the NFL with a 72.9 completion percentage in 2024.

While many expect this to be a real competition, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler recently reported that Tagovailoa may have a leg up for one specific reason.

“Now, one thing that helps Tua… I was told that in Kevin Stefanski’s offense, the most important thing that he values is accuracy,” Fowler stated. “When I asked a team source what has Tua done this spring, I was told that he’s been really accurate. So that does help his cause. But Penix, they have not given up on him either. This could be a situation where he could ease his way back in. Maybe Tua is a bit of a stopgap option for them. They could go multiple ways here.”
