Peet Viljoen – the husband of Real Housewives reality TV star Mel Viljoen – is facing 400 criminal charges, the National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed.

The disbarred attorney was arrested after arriving in South Africa after spending several weeks in a US ICE detention centre. Both Mel and Peet were detained for reportedly overstaying their visitor visa.

The couple were also arrested in March for allegedly shoplifting more than $5 000 worth of groceries from their local supermarket.

The Viljoens are known for a Carte Blanche feature exposing them for selling fraudulent Tammy Taylor Nails franchises. They’ve also made headlines for making racist comments towards black people on social media.

PEET VILJOEN FACING 400 CRIMINAL CHARGES

On Thursday, 18 June, Peet Viljoen appeared in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court relating to criminal charges dating back to 2010

The 57-year-old wore a beige-and-black Hugo Boss tracksuit and matching designer trainers. Supporting him in the gallery was his wife, Mel Viljoen, who wore a long black trench coat.

Speaking briefly to eNCA, Peet claimed that he was feeling “irritated”.

According to the NPA, Peet faces 400 criminal charges, including corruption, fraud, theft, perjury, and forgery, related to a 2010 property fraud scheme.

Peet will next appear on Friday, 26 June, for his formal bail application.

The state intends to oppose bail due to the nature of the offences.

NO PRIVACY OR PRISON, PLEASE

During his appearance, Peet Viljoen’s attorney, Johan van Wyk, requested that his client be kept in police custody at the Sunnyside police station in Pretoria, and not at a correctional centre.

The attorney claimed that it would be “difficult to consult” with Peet if he were placed in prison custody. He cited issues such as poor conditions and a lack of space and time.

Peet Viljoen’s bids to prevent the media from filming court proceedings and to be held in custody at a police station were both denied.

STARTING OVER IN SA AFTER US CRIMINAL CHARGES?

In media interviews since her return to South Africa earlier this month, Mel Viljoen has claimed that she and her husband, Peet, were hoping to “start over” in Cape Town.

The blonde reality TV star claimed that they had pursued a business visa in the US to launch their new business, Cuccio Nails South Africa.

However, she claimed that their immigration status was “pending” and that ICE and police  “targeted” the couple due to them being “celebrities”.

Speaking to Jacaranda FM, Mel also appealed to South Africans to forgive them for their past controversies.

She continued: “I’m begging and pleading with South Africans to give us a second chance and to judge us softly.” We are honest and hardworking people”.
