Speculation will persist on former Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s future into July before the NFL supplemental draft.

The Cleveland Browns could be one of those teams in the running despite Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel on the roster. Browns general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Todd Monken clearly didn’t tip their caps about any interest in Sorsby before the former college quarterback announced his decision to enter the supplemental draft.

That could mean any number of things for the Browns organization overall, which has yet to find a successful franchise quarterback since the team’s return in 1999. Sorsby showed potential in college between his time at Indiana and Cincinnati before Texas Tech, but his off-field gambling issues led to his exit from college football.

Starting with Monken, he clearly brushed aside the possibility of taking Sorsby when reporters asked him about it on June 1. It’s worth noting that Monken just took the head coaching job this offseason and is trying to rebuild an offense with a quarterback in Watson who hasn’t played since 2024 or re-insert Sanders, who didn’t light things up overall last season.

“I don’t think we’re in a position to wanna go down that road,” Monken told reporters. “That’s my opinion, that’s not Andrew’s. I like the quarterbacks we have. I think that’s a slippery slope, irrespective of talent, in terms of the situation he’s put himself in.”

Monken also emphasized that players have lost careers over gambling, and that it’s not the good place to start for an aspiring NFL quarterback. Berry didn’t minimize Sorsby’s off-field decisions, and the general manager explained that there is hope for Sorsby to make the right decisions going forward.

“There are two questions I ask,” Berry told 92.3 The Fan on June 12. “Is this a bad person or did they make a bad decision? The second is what are they doing after the fact to correct the behavior? Is this a pattern of decision-making and if so, have they done something to stop the pattern?”

Berry previously said nothing about Sorsby to the media on June 1 when asked about him on June 1. The Browns GM simply talked about the quarterback room.

“No different than what we do every year, we’ll do the work on prospects and then we’ll make the appropriate decision,” Berry told reporters

That decision date will arrive in July with the supplemental draft.
