Cowboys QB Dak Prescott starting minicamp limited with knee soreness, per Schottenheimer

The Cowboys have set themselves up to have a quarterback competition this summer between backups Joe Milton and Sam Howell.

Eleventh-year starter Dak Prescott will be limited as the Cowboys kick off their mandatory minicamp at The Star this week, but head coach Brian Schottenheimer categorized it as strictly a precautionary move, given the slowed-down nature of the week's work sessions.

"He's got a sore knee," Schottenheimer told reporters in his Tuesday press conference. "Nothing we're concerned about; we're just going to be smart."

Prescott will reportedly participate in 7-on-7 drills, per ESPN's Todd Archer.

Prescott, who will turn 33 next month, is coming off a 2025 season in which he started all 17 of the team's games. He led the league in completions, and finished in the top five in attempts, yards, touchdowns, and QBR.

He has, however, missed time in four of the five previous seasons due to various injuries.

The Cowboys will see several key playmakers take it easy over the next three days of minicamp work, which Schottenheimer acknowledged to reporters is "not real football."

Wide receiver George Pickens, who reported to the facility Monday for the first time this offseason, will also be held back from the team portions of practice; Schottenheimer jokingly suggested he'd be playing a "Coach Pickens" role for now.

The team is also dealing with some players who are dinged up, to varying degrees. Safety Malik Hooker and edge rusher James Houston both have a tight back, while safety Jalen Thompson is dealing with a pectoral strain, the coach explained. Additionally, cornerback DaRon Bland (foot) and edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku (hip) are both "doing great" in rehab as they work themselves back to action after offseason surgeries.
