Dylan Larkin

Two things appear to be virtual certainties regarding the trade request captain Dylan Larkin made to the Detroit Red Wings.

Visit syntagm.co.za for more information.

Firstly, he submitted a three-team list of desired destinations to Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman. That list was believed to include the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, and the Florida Panthers.

There are even published reports suggesting that the Panthers have already made a trade pitch to the Red Wings.

Secondly, it’s been reported that Yzerman made a counteroffer to Larkin and his agent, Patrick Brisson. He asked them to add at least three additional teams to that list.

Here’s where things get a little more interesting. Which teams do you suppose Larkin would have added to bump up his list?

Would the Dallas Stars be among those clubs? You’d have to think so.

The Stars are legitimate Stanley Cup contenders. The core of their team is right in their prime years, with plenty of opportunity still available in their Stanley Cup window. And Dallas could use a legit No. 1 center.

From Larkin’s point of view, there’s no state tax in Texas. He’d get to keep more of his annual AAV of $8.7 million.

Wyatt Johnston was filling the 1C role last season, but he’s equally at home on the wing. And if the Stars were able to slide Johnston back to the wing, it would free up the option to deal either Jason Robertson or Mavrik Bourque as part of a package for Larkin.

Nill Well Known To Red Wings

When Yzerman was initially making the transition from player to front office, among his mentors was then-Detroit assistant GM Jim Nill, currently the GM in Dallas. They know each other well.

Not that it’s necessary for GMs to be buddies to make trades, but it never hurts to have a relationship. St. Louis GM Doug Armstrong and Yzerman are tight, and no GM has made more trades with Yzerman than Armstrong.

Nill has a rich history of pulling off blockbuster deals. Reports are circulating that Nill has spoken to Yzerman about a potential package for Larkin.

The Stars are sitting with a little over $10 million in available cap space for next season. Robertson, an RFA, is going to demand more than that as the AAV of his new contract. His qualifying offer is $9.3 million.

He doesn’t have a no-movement clause, so the Stars could ship Robertson to the Red Wings. That would solve Detroit’s need for a scoring winger.

It would, however, leave Detroit lacking at center. But suppose the Stars could convince Tyler Seguin to waive his no-movement clause to go to the Red Wings? A long shot to be sure, but Seguin did play his junior hockey in the Detroit suburbs with the Plymouth Whalers, so he’s familiar with the area.

Seguin is a UFA following the 2026-27 season. He could leave the Wings after a year if he didn’t like it. Or perhaps Yzerman could offer him another year on the end of his pact to make the deal happen.

On Detroit’s end, Yzerman could bolster his offer by including goalie Sebastian Cossa. Casey DeSmith is a UFA on July 1. Dallas will need a backup for Jake Oettinger.
