Christopher Bell walked away from one of the hardest crashes of the NASCAR Cup Series season on Sunday, but Joe Gibbs revealed afterward that the Joe Gibbs Racing driver is dealing with injuries that will require further evaluation this week.
Bell was involved in a frightening late-race accident with Chase Elliott at Michigan International Speedway while the two drivers were battling near the front of the field.

According to Gibbs, Bell is dealing with injuries to both his wrist and ankle following the crash.
“Christopher Bell’s wrist and ankle will need to be looked at further when he returns to North Carolina,” Gibbs said after the race.
The update came after a wreck that instantly became one of the biggest storylines from Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400.
Christopher Bell and Chase Elliott crash while racing for position
The incident occurred on Lap 148 shortly after a restart.
Bell and Elliott were running side-by-side near the front of the field when Elliott’s No. 9 Chevrolet got loose underneath Bell’s No. 20 Toyota entering Turn 3. Elliott slid up the racetrack and made contact with Bell, sending both cars hard into the outside wall.
The impact destroyed both race cars and brought out a caution that was later upgraded to a red flag as track crews repaired damage to the SAFER Barrier.
Bell’s Toyota briefly caught fire after slamming the wall, adding another dramatic element to an already violent crash.
Despite the severity of the accident, both drivers climbed from their cars under their own power. Elliott immediately walked over to Bell following the incident, and the two shared an embrace before heading to the infield care center for evaluation.
Bell remained in the care center for nearly an hour before eventually being released. He declined interview requests afterward.
Veteran NASCAR reporter Jeff Gluck later reported that Gibbs said Bell is dealing with wrist and ankle injuries and will be evaluated further during the week.

While Bell appears likely to return next weekend at Pocono Raceway, Gibbs’ comments introduced an unexpected question heading into one of the most important stretches of the regular season.
