Last month, President Ramaphosa fired minister Sisisi Tolashe and replaced her with interim minister Sindisiwe Lydia Chikunga. This could have a bearing on how social grants run in the coming months. And here’s why …
SASSA CHILDREN’S GRANTS IN JULY 2026
It’s all about looking after the nation’s vulnerable children. Image: FileYou see, while Tolashe was in charge, she oversaw one of the smallest grant increases in recent memory (just 3.4%), due to pressure from the National Treasury. However, the impermanence of Chikunga’s position also doesn’t bode well for meaningful improvement to SASSA Children’s Grants in July 2026 either.
Sadly, there are other factors impacting South African Social Security Agency grants right now, too. Like revisions to income eligibility requirements for the SASSA Child Support grant. Previously, a single caregiver could earn R5 100 per month and still qualify.
Now that limit has increased to R5 800. For married couples looking after a minor, the figure increases from R10 200 to R11 600 per month. Tallied up annually, that is R69 600 (single person) and R139 200 (couple). Note that there is no asset portion to the means test, like with SASSA Old-Age Grants in July 2026.
BETTER NEWS FOR SASSA CHILDREN’S GRANTS IN JULY 2026
Meanwhile, there is some better news to report for SASSA Children’s Grants in July 2026. The agency claims new maximum wait time of just 90 minutes in its queues. This is thanks to new smart-queue management technology and self-service kiosks with Wi-Fi for beneficiaries to complete eLife and biometric verification. Likewise, in some cases, SASSA Child Support Grants have been approved on the same day. Previously, the waiting period was closer to three months.
As ever, for new applicants, SASSA Children’s Grants in July 2026 include SASSA Foster Child, SASSA Care Dependency, over and above Child Support. As titled, Foster Child is only for court-appointed homes that care for foster children. This increased this year by R40 from R1 250 to R1 290. And foster parents may only receive one grant per child.
As before, SASSA Care Dependency is for mentally and/or physically disabled children under the age of 18. As such, this pays the same as adult Disability. Meaning it also increased by R80 from R2 320 to R2 400 in April 2026. Disability, temporary or permanent, has to be determined by state-appointed doctor, officially acknowledged by SASSA. The SASSA Child Support Grant pays R580 per month, up by R20 from R560.
