The Monegasque set the fastest time of 1 minute 13.978 seconds, beating Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton by 0.226 seconds. Max Verstappen of Red Bull completed the top three.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli was fourth, followed by Mercedes team-mate George Russell.

There were two red flags during the session. The first one with some 24 minutes left after Isack Hadjar crashed his Red Bull into the wall.

Practice was interrupted for a second time in the late stages after Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin clipped the barriers and lost part of his front wing.

Mercedes have dominated the season so far, with Antonelli winning the last four races after George Russell won the season opener in Australia.

The Monaco race marks the first one in Europe. Overtaking on the legendary but narrow street circuit is almost impossible these days, but chances could be a little higher this time after rule changes for the season.

Securing pole position, however, is still crucial for a victory in the Principality.

Second practice is later on Friday. Qualifying for Sunday's showdown is on Saturday.
