Leao breaks silence on difficult Milan season: ‘It tested me physically and mentally’

Rafael Leao has broken his silence on Milan’s troubled campaign, posting a heartfelt message on Instagram in which he acknowledged the personal toll the season took while wishing the club well for the future, amid growing uncertainty over his own future at San Siro.

The Portuguese winger, who contributed 10 goals and three assists in 31 appearances across Serie A and the Coppa Italia, wrote:

“It was a season that tested my physical and psychological state to the maximum, and only those who experienced it closely with me know how difficult it was. For that reason I want to thank everyone who did the possible and the impossible to make sure this season took a completely different direction. May Milan triumph again next season.”

Leao future in doubt at Milan as he holds out for top clubs

The message is notable for what it does not say as much as for what it does.

There is no declaration of commitment to the club, no mention of next season in a Milan shirt, only a wish directed at the institution rather than a personal pledge.

That ambiguity will do little to dampen speculation about his future, particularly given reports that owner Gerry Cardinale has privately indicated Leao could be available for transfer this summer.

The 26-year-old, who has two years remaining on his contract worth up to €7 million per season, is understood to have rejected interest from Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, holding out for a move to one of Europe’s top five leagues.
