ARLINGTON — The Texas Rangers‘ offense hit rock bottom Monday night, when Houston Astros right-hander Tatsuya Imai and two relievers combined on a no-hitter in a 9-0 victory at Globe Life Field.
It was the sixth no-hitter thrown against the Rangers in franchise history and the first combined no-hitter. The Rangers were last no-hit May 19, 2021, by Yankees right-hander Corey Kluber in the season after he pitched only one inning for the Rangers.
The Astros’ defense was excellent, taking four potential hits away from the Rangers. The first came in the fourth, when shortstop Jeremy Pena fielded a Joc Pederson grounder behind second base and saw first baseman Christian Walker make a nifty dig on a low throw.
Center fielder Jake Meyers made two nice running catches in the fifth inning, first on a Justin Focue flyball and another on a loud drive by Danny Jansen. Third baseman Isaac Paredes picked a hard grounder by Alejandro Osuna for the last out of the sixth.
Neither team had a hit in the first three innings, though the Astros scored in the first inning against Kumar Rocker. They scored four times against Rocker in five innings and added five in the seventh.
The Rangers had only one hit Sunday night through eight innings before finishing with three to cap a lousy road trip. They were also no-hit for 7 1/3 innings May 15 at Houston against Spencer Arrighetti.
