The Cavaliers star finished with 19 points, but his lack of effort on the defensive end drew heavy criticism as Cleveland slipped to a daunting 0-3 deficit in the series.
Why James Harden Is Drawing Heat for His Defense Against the Knicks
Harden has built quite the playoff reputation over the years. Usually, criticism of the former MVP centers on his tendency to disappear offensively in big postseason moments. This year, however, frustrations have shifted toward his defense and visibly slow legs on that end of the floor.
Harden finished Game 3 with 1 steal, 0 blocks, and 6 turnovers, marking the second time in this series he has committed 6 giveaways.
The backlash against Harden intensified after multiple defensive possessions in the second half went viral.
With the Cavaliers trailing 77-69 midway through the third quarter, one Knicks player attacked the paint uncontested while Harden stood watching as the easy layup dropped.
“James Harden’s defense is HILARIOUSLY bad 😭 Literally giving up open layups to the Knicks,” BrickCenter posted.
During the same quarter, another Knicks player slipped behind the defense and received a lob directly under the basket, with Harden again offering little resistance at the rim.
The sequence only added fuel to the criticism.
“James Harden is a LITERAL CONE on defense 😭,” BrickCenter wrote.
Things got even uglier in the fourth quarter. After knocking down back-to-back open triples earlier, Landry Shamet buried another step-back 3 directly over Harden after receiving a pass from Jalen Brunson.
Meanwhile, veteran analyst Skip Bayless also joined the pile-on against Harden.
“In a must-win home game, James Harden went 1-7 from 3 with 6 turnovers. In the biggest playoff games, he plays with no follow-me fire, no apparent urgency or energy. In the postseason, he has too often displayed loser intangibles. Congrats, Cavs,” Bayless posted on X.
“Cavs used their last bit of energy to take Detroit out and hasn’t done s**t since,” one user quipped, referencing the Cavaliers’ 7-game semifinal win over the Detroit Pistons.
“They just traded for James Harden…don’t sleep on the Cleveland Cavaliers,” Hater Report joked.
The Knicks have repeatedly targeted Harden throughout the series and found success attacking him.
Game 1 served as an early warning sign when Brunson repeatedly hunted Harden late, helping New York erase a 22-point deficit and steal the opener.
Through 17 playoff games in 2026, Harden has averaged 19.6 points, 5.7 assists, and 5.2 rebounds, but with Cleveland now down 0-3, scrutiny of his postseason performances has returned in full force.
