The season ended for the top farm club of the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. However, there’s still hockey to be played for two members of the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Shortly after being eliminated by the Chicago Wolves in the Central Division final of the Calder Cup playoffs, Grand Rapids forwards Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and Eduards Tralmaks were jetting off to Switzerland.

There, both Brandsegg-Nygard (Norway) and Tralmaks (Latvia) will be joining their respective countries for the remainder of the IIHF World Championship.

Brandsegg-Nygard, 20, suited up for 14 games with the Red Wings this season. collecting one assist. He accounted for 20 goals and 44 points in 60 games with the Griffins. During the AHL playoffs, MBN was a point-per-game player with 4-4-8 numbers in eight games.

He’s played for Norway at the past two World Championship tournaments.

Tralmaks spent the entire 2025-26 season in Grand Rapids. He scored 26 goals and picked up 42 points. In the Calder Cup playoffs, the Latvian winger scored four goals in eight games.

He played for Latvia at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Tralmaks was good for three goals in four games. He’s been part of Latvia’s team for the past two World Tourneys. Last year, Tralmaks posted 3-4-7 totals in seven games.

MBN Won’t Face His Red Wings Teammates

Brandsegg-Nygard won’t get to Fribourg in time for Saturday’s game against Sweden. The Swedish roster includes Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond and defenseman Albert Johansson. Raymond is currently leading the tournament in scoring with 4-5-9 totals from four games.

The Swedes opted not to add Grand Rapids defensemen Axel Sandin-Pellikka and Erik Gustafsson.

MBN will play in Norway’s last two group stage games against Czechia and Denmark, seeking to help the Norwegians reach the quarterfinals. Norway is fifth in Group B with seven points. The Norwegians are two points behind the fourth-place Swedes.

Latvia is in seventh place in Group A with one win in four games and three points. However, the Latvians are only two points back of the fourth-place USA.
